The Pono Pono Peace Initiative is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization registered in Hawaii and a social enterprise registered in Alberta. Our mission is to empower peacebuilding students by offering supplemental learning, internships, and career development opportunities tailored to the Asia-Pacific region. Our vision is to ensure that 80% of local peacebuilding students graduate with a clear path to graduate school or multiple job opportunities that value their unique training and skills.
Our values are:
- Student-Centric Approach: We prioritize our students' needs and aspirations, ensuring that our programs and initiatives are tailored to their individual development and career goals.- Equity and Accessibility: We are committed to creating an inclusive environment that removes barriers and provides equal opportunities for all peacebuilding students, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
- Collaborative Partnerships: We foster strong relationships with organizations, institutions, and industry leaders, both locally in Hawaii and across the Asia-Pacific and Oceania region, to expand the range of internships, training programs, and job opportunities available to our students.
- Continuous Improvement: We continuously evaluate and enhance our programs to ensure they remain relevant, effective, and aligned with the evolving needs of our students and the job market.
- Ethical Integrity: We uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct and professional integrity in all our dealings, serving as role models for our students and the community.
Our name comes from the Hawaiian word 'Pono' which means balance and righteousness. In Hawaiian when you put two words beside each other, their meaning is deepened or emphasized. Thus 'Pono Pono' extends Pono to a deeper level and reminds us that to have Pono Pono peace it is not enough to avoid conflict or do right; we need to do more to create peace! It is not enough to remove the weeds; we must plant the flowers and food of peace.
Pono Pono is a call to be a positive influence in the world wherever we are.

The Pono Pono Peace Initiative seeks to expand its reach and impact by promoting its online courses and training programs. The goal of this project is to develop a comprehensive digital marketing strategy that effectively targets potential learners and increases course enrollment. The strategy should leverage various digital marketing channels, such as social media, email marketing, and search engine optimization, to reach a broader audience. The project will require an analysis of current market trends, competitor strategies, and the identification of the target demographic. By applying classroom knowledge of digital marketing principles, learners will create a cohesive plan that aligns with the organization's mission and values. The project aims to provide a practical application of marketing theories and tools, enhancing the learners' skills in strategic planning and digital communication.
Cultivating Safe Spaces: A Cultural Shift Initiative
The Pono Pono Peace Initiative seeks to develop a comprehensive sexual violence prevention program aimed at transforming organizational culture. The primary goal is to foster leadership that promotes a healthy work environment by addressing issues of patriarchy and hierarchy, which often contribute to environments where sexual harassment can occur. This project will involve researching best practices in organizational change, understanding the dynamics of power and privilege, and developing educational materials that can be used to train leaders and employees. The program will focus on creating awareness and providing practical tools for establishing workplace norms that prioritize respect, equality, and safety. By engaging with these concepts, learners will apply their classroom knowledge of organizational behavior, psychology, and leadership to real-world challenges, ultimately contributing to a safer and more inclusive workplace culture.
Peacebuilding Incubator Program Design
The Pono Pono Peace Initiative aims to establish an incubator program dedicated to nurturing innovative peacebuilding projects. The goal is to create a structured framework that supports individuals and teams in developing projects that promote peace and conflict resolution. The incubator will provide resources, mentorship, and a collaborative environment to foster creativity and effective problem-solving. The project involves researching existing incubator models, identifying best practices, and tailoring them to the specific needs of peacebuilding initiatives. The team will also develop a comprehensive plan outlining the program's structure, participant selection criteria, and evaluation metrics. This project offers learners the opportunity to apply their knowledge of program design, research methodologies, and strategic planning in a real-world context.
Pono Pono Peace Initiative Website Redesign
The Pono Pono Peace Initiative is seeking to enhance its online presence by redesigning its website to better reflect its mission and engage its audience. The current website lacks modern design elements, user-friendly navigation, and mobile responsiveness, which can hinder user experience and accessibility. The goal of this project is to create a visually appealing, intuitive, and responsive website that effectively communicates the organization's values and initiatives. By applying principles of web design and user experience, learners will have the opportunity to translate classroom knowledge into practical skills. The project will focus on improving the site's layout, incorporating multimedia elements, and ensuring compatibility across various devices and browsers. This redesign aims to increase user engagement and support the organization's outreach efforts.
