Details

  • Create effective communication strategies and tools for HOUSE and affiliates.
  • Create content for social media, including infographics, event posters, and photos. Consistently update our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts.
  • Create and disseminate monthly external and internal newsletters to keep our members up to date on HOUSE and its affiliates’ goals, accomplishments, and news.
  • Write content for the HOUSE and its affiliates websites as needed.
  • Plan events for community engagement alongside other staff members. Engagement events will include public consultations, workshops, and community meals.
  • Manage media relations by creating and maintaining relationships with media outlets, creating media reports, writing articles, scheduling interviews and statements, and responding to media inquiries.
  • Collaborate with other team members on communications materials.

The Affordable Housing Committee at York University was established in 2016 to facilitate the creation of affordable cooperative housing at or near York University's three campuses - Keele, Glendon and Markham.

There is a unique opportunity to create affordable co-operative housing with renewed interest from all levels of government to fund affordable housing. There are over 150 housing co-ops throughout Toronto, many of which have been built through union support; however, very few new affordable housing buildings have been built since the 1990's because of neoliberal budget cuts to affordable housing programs. One of the last housing co-ops built was the Harry Sherman Crowe Housing Co-op at York University, which was the result of the efforts of labour unions at York University organizing to lobby, finance and build.
