Main Objective:

The goal of this project is to design, develop, and integrate a fully functional interactive map into the Canadian Museums website. The map will enable users to discover museums across Canada based on location, category, and other filters. The project will prioritize intuitive UX design and technical performance to enhance the user experience and site engagement.

Deliverables

Tasks and Activities:

Students will:

  • Analyze the existing Canadian Museums website to identify the best integration approach for an interactive map.
  • Design and develop a responsive, mobile-friendly interactive map displaying museum locations across Canada.
  • Implement filters and search functionalities (e.g., by province, museum type, popularity).
  • Use Google Maps API, Mapbox, or similar platforms to build the solution.
  • Ensure the map can easily integrate museum data from a provided JSON or CSV file.
  • Document the map's architecture, setup instructions, and provide recommendations for future scalability.

Deliverables:

  • A fully functional, embedded interactive map integrated into the Canadian Museums website (staging environment).
  • A short UX report outlining user flow improvements related to the map.
  • Technical documentation including setup steps, code repository, and recommendations for scaling.
  • A brief recorded demonstration video (5-10 minutes) explaining the project outcomes.

Why this project matters:

This project offers learners a real-world opportunity to build an interactive system that will be actively used within a national cultural initiative. Students will apply UX design principles, front-end development skills, and API integration techniques, while producing tangible portfolio material.

The Canadian Museums project represents a significant movement to transform how locals and tourists experience heritage, giving students the chance to impact thousands of users across the country.

Innova Museums is an emerging digital interactive media agency dedicated to transforming the way museums connect with the public. We are currently in the startup phase, building the foundations of a comprehensive platform that seeks to offer 360° solutions to cultural institutions.

Our focus is on developing tools that enhance every stage of the visitor experience, starting with the purchase of electronic tickets (e-tickets) and extending to interactive, immersive, and personalized experiences, both within the museum and in virtual environments.

Although we are taking our first operational steps, we have a clear vision, and an ecosystem of projects in development —with the most advanced being Canadian Museums, a digital guide to explore museums and heritage sites nationwide.

Collaborating with students is key for us: not only because we value young talent, but because we believe in creating synergies that benefit both parties. We want this experience to be meaningful, formative, and an opportunity for participants to leave their mark on a cultural initiative with significant potential.
